Virtual Fly-ins Allow Dialogue with Members of Congress

While our traditional fly-ins are not currently possible given the COVID-19 crisis, the LUGPA Political Affairs Committee continues to advocate for independent urology groups. In Spring 2020, LUGPA convened a series of virtual fly-ins for events that were originally scheduled to take place in April and May. These video meetings gave LUGPA members another outlet to dialogue with Members of Congress on policies under development by Congress and the Administration and become up to date of the latest policy developments on the Capitol Hill in a virtual setting.

Our physicians and administrators were able to share their personal perspectives on how the COVID-19 crisis has impacted patient care and challenged independent practice. We reiterated that the COVID crisis has presented huge challenges to our practices, as our patient volume and revenue has been reduced dramatically. As independent practices are experiencing unprecedented financial losses, Congress and the Administration cannot afford to only provide aid to hospital systems while leaving independent physicians behind.

In Spring 2020, the LUGPA Political Affairs Committee met via video conference with the following Members of Congress:

Representative Vern Buchanan (R-Florida) | Member, House Ways and Means Subcommittee on Health
Representative Michael Burgess (R-Texas) | Ranking Member, House Energy and Commerce Subcommittee on Health
Representative Joe Kennedy (D-Massachusetts) | Member, House Energy and Commerce Subcommittee on Health
Representative Cathy McMorris Rodgers (R-Washington) | Member, House Energy and Commerce Committee
Senator Ben Sasse (R-Nebraska) | Member, Senate Finance Subcommittee on Health Care

The LUGPA Political Affairs Committee extends its sincere gratitude to the following groups whose contributions made these events possible:

Advanced Urology Institute (FL)
Kansas City Urology Associates
MidLantic Urology LLC (PA)
Urology Austin (TX)
Urology Centers of Alabama
Urology San Antonio (TX)
